What Is an Acre? Origins and Modern Usage Explained

An acre is a unit of land area equal to exactly 4,046.8564224 square metres, or 43,560 square feet. It originated in medieval England as the area a yoke of oxen could plough in a day — a strip one furlong long by one chain wide. One acre equals 0.404686 hectares, and 640 acres make one square mile.

The acre is one of the few medieval units still doing serious work: property deeds, farm subsidy claims, US land records and rural estate agency all run on it, centuries after the ploughing practice that produced it disappeared. It is also a peculiar unit by modern standards — not a round number of anything, not a square, not derived from any base measurement still in use. All three oddities have one explanation. Nobody designed the acre. It was measured off the back of a plough, and the arithmetic was tidied up afterwards.

How big is an acre exactly?

An acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 square metres. That figure is not an approximation of some historical average — it is a definition, fixed by international agreement in 1959 and unchanged since.

In imperial terms the same area is 43,560 square feet, or 4,840 square yards. Both figures are exact. An acre laid out as a square would measure 208.7 feet, or 63.6 metres, along each side — though an acre almost never was a square, for reasons that become clear once you know its origin.

Where the acre came from

The acre began as a measure of work rather than of ground. It described the area a yoke of oxen could plough in a single day: a practical figure for a farmer allocating labour, and one that varied with soil and season before anyone tried to standardise it.

The shape followed from the same logic. Turning a plough team is slow and awkward, so medieval ploughmen cut long strips and turned as rarely as they could. The strip length settled at a furlong — literally a "furrow long", 220 yards — and the width at one chain, 22 yards. Multiply the two and the result is 4,840 square yards. One acre.

This is why the acre resists tidy conversion. It is the product of two lengths that were themselves derived from ploughing and surveying practice, not from any coherent decimal base. The hectare, by contrast, was designed on paper from the metre and comes out as a round 10,000 square metres by construction. There was never any prospect of the two lining up neatly.

Chains, furlongs and roods

The units surrounding the acre are worth knowing, because they still appear in older deeds and throughout US survey records.

  • The chain — 22 yards, or 66 feet. Gunter’s chain, introduced in 1620, was a physical measuring chain of 100 links that surveyors used well into the twentieth century. Ten square chains make an acre.
  • The furlong — 220 yards, or ten chains. Eight furlongs make a mile, which is why a mile is 1,760 yards rather than any round figure.
  • The rod, also called a pole or a perch — 5.5 yards. One hundred and sixty square rods make an acre.
  • The rood — a quarter of an acre, or 40 square rods. Older English deeds express areas as acres, roods and perches, written in the form 3-2-14 for three acres, two roods and fourteen perches.

A cricket pitch is a surviving fossil of this system. The 22 yards between the wickets is exactly one chain, which is also exactly the width of the original ploughed acre.

Field patterns preserve it too. Long narrow parcels in older English and Irish parishes often follow the medieval ploughing strips they were laid over, and hedge lines running at roughly ten-to-one proportions are usually a direct inheritance from a plough team that could not turn easily.

The imperial ladder of area units

Imperial and US customary units are identical for area, whatever the differences elsewhere between the two systems. The acre in Britain and the acre in the United States are the same unit — unlike, say, the gallon.

They stack irregularly. The ladder steps by 9, then 30.25, then 160, then 640, and each of those numbers has a separate historical source rather than any connection to the others. Every step has to be learned individually, and no step can be guessed from the one below it.

Only the square foot, the acre and the square mile are in general use. The rod and the rood are effectively historical, although the rod survives in British allotment gardening, where plots have traditionally been described in rods rather than square metres.

The two figures worth committing to memory are 43,560 square feet to the acre and 640 acres to the square mile. Neither is guessable, and both come up constantly in American property work, where lots below about half an acre are almost always quoted in square feet.

When was the acre standardised?

Until the middle of the twentieth century the acre depended on whichever yard a given country used, and those yards did not quite agree. The 1959 international yard and pound agreement resolved it by defining the yard as exactly 0.9144 metres across the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Every imperial area unit inherited that precision, and the acre became exactly 4,046.8564224 square metres.

The United States retained one exception. Land surveys carried out under the older US survey foot use an acre of about 4,046.8726 square metres — larger by roughly 0.016 square metres, or four parts per million. That is irrelevant for a garden and material for a section boundary running several miles.

Historic regional acres were far less consistent. The Irish or plantation acre ran to 7,840 square yards, about 1.62 statute acres. The Scottish acre, standardised in 1661, was roughly 1.26 statute acres — sources put it between 1.26 and 1.27 depending on which historical Scots ell is used. Both were abolished for official purposes in the nineteenth century, but they still surface in old documents and regularly confuse the people reading them.

Who still measures land in acres?

The acre remains the standard unit of land area in the United States, and it dominates informal usage in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Canada despite the hectare being the official unit in all three. It is also in wide everyday use across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ghana and much of the Caribbean.

In the United States the acre is built into the survey system itself. The Public Land Survey System divides land into square-mile sections of 640 acres, grouped into townships of 36 sections — 23,040 acres, or 9,324 hectares. Quarter sections of 160 acres were the standard homestead allocation, and the pattern is still legible from the air across the Midwest as a grid of square fields.

What do people get wrong about acres?

The most common error is treating an acre as a fixed shape. It is not. A long narrow paddock and a compact square field of the same area are each one acre, and the dimensions quoted on a listing tell you nothing reliable about acreage until you multiply them together.

The second involves the acre-foot, which is a unit of volume rather than area and is used for water in the western United States. One acre-foot is the volume needed to cover one acre to a depth of one foot: 43,560 cubic feet, or 1,233 cubic metres. It measures reservoir capacity and irrigation allocation, never land.

A third trap is assuming that acreage says something about value. An acre of Grade 1 arable, an acre of upland grazing and an acre carrying planning consent are the same measurement and three entirely different assets. The unit describes extent, and nothing else.

An old unit, precisely defined

Nothing about the acre is tidy: 4,046.8564224 square metres, 43,560 square feet, 0.404686 hectares, 640 to the square mile. It started as a day’s ploughing for a yoke of oxen, laid out as a furlong by a chain, and was fixed at its present exact value by the 1959 international yard and pound agreement. The shape is long gone. The area is now one of the most precisely defined units in everyday use, which is the odd fate of a measurement that began as an estimate of how tired an ox would be by evening.
